Twitter has been a growing trend since it began in 2006. More recently, companies have been adopting twitter accounts and marketing their business to their followers who are potential customers. Some older companies are still hesitant to create websites, Facebook pages and twitters, but as long as they follow proper etiquette and marketing techniques, having a social media venue can only increase their companies reputation and possibly increase their brand loyalty and preference to consumers.

Twitter has become one of the newest ways to promote a brand and market to a company’s prospective target audience. Twitter is a growing network that will continue to be on the rise in the future. In November of 2010 only 8% of internet users used twitter everyday. In February 2012 this number increased to 15% of all internet users. This goes to show how much and fast Twitter is expanding.

Companies cannot only market to people in their respective area, but they can also have consumers in other countries that could be potential consumers (if their product or service allows). According to an infographic, the United States is the number one user of twitter as a percentage, followed by Brazil and India. This allows companies to further expand their brand name and their prospective target market.

Twitter and other social media sources have changed communication between consumers and businesses. Since consumers now have direct and immediate contact with companies they can ask and receive answers to questions and concerns instantly. Connecting with a consumer directly through a company’s twitter, or any other social media forum, gives a consumer a sense of unity and an emotional attachment to a brand.

Know Twitter Users

Companies who do not have a Twitter are missing out on potential feedback from their consumers. The percentage of potential consumers that use Twitter to learn about products and services is 42%, while 41% of tweeters provide opinions about products and services. These two things can allow a business to interact with consumers to discuss downfalls and hopefully fix them. 31% also ask for opinions on products, so companies can see what is being said about their products or services.

Consumer Placement With Twitter

Companies who have Twitter accounts are more likely to be considered when a consumer has to make a purchase decision later on. One survey found that 67% of consumers are more likely to purchase from brands that they follow. Meanwhile, 79% of US Twitter followers will recommend a brand, service or product; assuming that they are please with their decision.

Mobile apps are increasing company’s, of all sizes, income. With all the features that can be created in an app and presented to the owner of the phone, not having a mobile app is almost setting companies up for disaster. A mobile app can be specifically designed to the way the company desires which can keep each app unique. Mobile apps are more user-friendly than online websites and easier to access on a phone versus mobile internet.

One of the most important features of mobile apps is the ability to send push notifications out to its market and it can also increase a businesses marketing strategy. According to a website that features in digital marketing, it ha done research and has found the following statistics about mobile apps’ push-notifications: 540% increase in daily app opens, three times faster response time than email, and a 30% increase in social sharing on Facebook and Twitter.

Mobile apps have also been said to increase the amount of sales a business gets through easier mobile browsing and a faster connection to what the consumer wants to browse. Mobile sales have increased due to the fact that people can shop from nearly anywhere. The number of places a user can shop for a businesses items are endless from “the morning commute, waiting in line for movie tickets and sitting in a doctor’s office are all places people could be using their smartphones to shop your store or engage with your brand” – Mashable.


Another benefit of companies using mobile apps is that they can target their users based on location. This unique attribute allows businesses to send out possible promotions based on occurring events and an area that a user is in. This is called geo-targeting. Having the ability to change a promotion quickly is a key in mobile apps because for other medias of marketing from television commercials, radio ads, to billboards, these all take time to submit and have air, as opposed to a mobile app can just be updated and it’s promotion is already being viewed.

The final characteristic about mobile apps that I thought is another one of the most important are the offers and deals that can be made for a business like Groupon. They can base their targets off of location and then send a push notification to a consumer to let them know that the deal is beginning of ending and what the deal is. This company promotes other companies and allows all of their users to get the best deals and in the most timely matter.

The first two are customer support and research, because questions that a customer may have are quickly asked and can be responded to quickly. This also allows the problem or question to be resolved at the consumer’s convenience. The next two benefits are promoting and informing. Companies can take advantage of the ease of using twitter for promotions and how instantly their customers can be updated with information. When companies ask questions or interact with their customers they increase your traffic, buzz, and establish a loyal set of followers. Having a twitter to update followers can improve a company’s placement in their consumers mind. This also goes along with the branding part of a company’s marketing scheme. The final two reasons for companies to use Twitter for marketing, are for building community discussion and branding. Twitter creates a common place for a company’s audience to openly talk about the business and products. Seeing how a company handles issues or a company’s values is the branding aspect of marketing. Branding gives a company/product an identity and personality. According to one Bloomberg Businessweek, “Branding is about getting your prospects to perceive you as the only solution to their problem;” so that they will see you as the top choice of product or service.
